Create an itinerary including Archaeological site of Mystra
Uninhabited for nearly 200 years, Archaeological site of Mystra is a fortified town with a long history. In 1249, William of Villehardouin commissioned the castle to be built atop a large hill that overlooked the town. For many years, the castle passed hands as the town fell victim to siege after siege by various ancient civilizations. Despite a revolving ownership, the town often played a central political and cultural role, from acting as the seat of the Byzantine military governor to being the capital of the Despotate of Morea. Wander through the ruins of the ancient city, and enjoy the views of Sparta below. • Spread over 1400 meters up a steep hill, ancient Sparta always fascinates. We were there in off season so not so crowded with tourists, many churches of course, very interesting ruins.

  • We were very impressed by the Byzantine city of Mystras (UNESCO), as you can read in my review for "Archeological site of Mystras". Go!

  • Amazing place, so much history to explore... Nicely organised, the views are breathtaking, most of the monuments are open and in very good shape. The nature around this area (outside the archaeological site) is also perfect for hiking. Definitely will revisit. Keep in mind that in summer it gets hot (especially after 12) and everything is uphill, so come prepared with water, sunscreen...
  • Beautiful ancient site which is partly restored. Stunning views! Not recommended on very sunny and hot days as the walk between the buildings is mostly without shade. Tip: the museum is open, just push the door a little harder.
