The Little Metropolis (Greek: Μικρή Μητρόπολη), formally the Church of St. Eleutherios (Άγιος Ελευθέριος) or Panagia Gorgoepikoos (Παναγία Γοργοεπίκοος, "Panagia Who Grants Requests Quickly"), is a Byzantine church located at the Mitropoleos square, next to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens (the "Great Metropolis").

  • Chanced upon this charming church while out for a stroll. It's old and traditional and a pleasure to fund in the middle of the modern city.

  • This little church was built on top of a Greek temple using primarily stones for other ruined buildings. And unlike most Byzantine sacred architecture, bricks were only used for the dome.
