As one of the three major museums in Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz Museum contains a gallery with fine art representing the medieval period to early 20th century. The museum's collection began to come together in 1824, although it didn't move to its current location until 2001. In that year, it also gained a comprehensive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works on permanent loan from Gérard Corboud. Consider getting a Museum Card, which allows access to this and many other museums in the city. With our international travel planner, Cologne attractions like Wallraf-Richartz Museum can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Although it is not completely open right now (one floor is under construction when I visited) I still really enjoyed it! The first floor is dedicated to old religious paintings. The second floor was my favourite because it had paintings from the baroque period. I particularly enjoyed reading about how paintings are analysed in order to understand how they were painted as well as if they are real.

Museum is simply superb. It is not too big, but well structured and has some stunning pieces of art ranging from Middle Ages to XIX century Impressionism. It is well structured, many items have short, useful descriptions.
