More than 40 kings and queens of Denmark are buried inside Roskilde Domkirke, making it a world record-holder in royal church burials. This World Heritage Site features mid-15th century frescoes, monumental Baroque paintings, stucco decoration, and elaborate sculptural compositions as well as and gilt, silver-plated, and white marble sarcophagi. The present brick cathedral with its twin Gothic spires was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, but porches and side chapels were added up to the end of the 19th century. Go to the gable's windows of the Christian IV's chapel, and see four putti holding up the symbols of death: a skull, a scythe, a torch, and an hourglass. The royal tombs represent the evolution of funerary monumental art. Compare the simple, classical appearance of the 19th century Frederick V's chapel with the ornate Baroque interior of the Christian IV’s chapel. The cathedral was opened from 1 PM on the day we came. There is an entry fee for adults of 60 DKK and it's free for kids under 18. We were really impressed by the beauty but also by all royal tombs...

This is a UNESCO world heritage site, so you have to know that it has some important historical significance. In this case it is the burial place of the Danish kings, and the tombs don't get much...

This is a really impressive church with some beautiful exhibits inside along with audio guide, although most of the plaques are in Danish. But the town is quite charming as well.

An impressive cathedral with the graves of most Danish kings and queens. We enjoyed the short and funny bios near some of the graves.
