St. Mark's Church, Zagreb

Take in historic architecture and art at St. Mark's Church. Notice the roof tiles, which depict a white castle on a red background--the coats of arms of the city of Zagreb. Watch for the Romanesque window and Gothic doorway that remain from the original structure. At the southern portal, admire the Gothic sculptures, which represent the twelve apostles, Joseph and Mary with baby Jesus, and St. Mark with the lion. On the northwest wall of the church, you can see the oldest coat of arms of Zagreb from 1499. In the church interior, keep an eye out for two statues by Ivan Mestrovic, considered by many to be the most famous Croatian sculptor of the 20th century.
