At Ban Josip Jelačić Square, the most common meeting place in the capital city, watch people coming and going among the newspaper and flower vendors. The square has been the center of the downtown pedestrian zone since the 17th century. Admire the classicist, secessionist, and modernist buildings. See the large equestrian statue of Count Josip Jelacic, who led Croatians into a battle for independence in the 19th century.
