On the site of castles dating to the Roman period, Trsat Castle today bears the marks of a later reconstruction in Neo-Gothic style. The castle changed hands multiple times between the 14th and 19th centuries, finally falling into the hands of an eccentric Austro-Hungarian naval officer who undertook its massive restoration. The castle features a stereotypical medieval tower and a Greek facade complete with columns and statues. Be sure to make your way to one of the terrace cafes for a view of Kvarner Bay.
