Create an itinerary including Labrang Monastery (Labuleng Si)
Watch Buddhist monks in their fuchsia robes turn squeaky prayer wheels at Labrang Monastery (Labuleng Si), the biggest Tibetan lamasery outside of Tibet. Apart from chapels, golden-roofed temples, and halls illuminated by yak-butter lamps, the 18th-century monastery houses a library and a printing house, as well as six monastic colleges. See lifelike Buddha statues made from precious metals, ivory, jade, sandalwood, crystal, and simple clay. Note that the only way to visit the interior of temples and colleges is to join a guided tour. • Definitely worth the effort to visit, no photos I saw when researching it, do it justice. You can’t take photos inside, except of the yak butter sculptures, which are a lot more impressive than they.....  more

  • Historically fascinating. Saw a little llama and many boys in training. Protests, arrests and lockdowns in this area pre 2013. Loved the museums and artifacts. Visit during spring.
  • Such a brilliant place to visit and reflect.
