The largest operating religious institution in Tibet, Tashilunpo Monastery is home to the world's biggest gilded statue Maitreya Buddha--Buddha of the Future. The first Dalai Lama founded the monastery in 1447 and, while other Tibetan monasteries were severely damaged during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the major structures of this one survived almost intact. Walk the cobbled alleys winding around aged buildings and see many photographs of Panchen Lamas--the highest-ranking lamas after Dalai Lama. Look for the Panchen Lama palace with golden stupas and three statues representing Amitabha Buddha, Buddha of Infinite Light. You can get a little bored of visiting monasteries in Tibet....but this is well worth a visit simply for the amazing golden tombs that it has of previous Dalai Lamas. Amazing!

Love the vibe here! It’s the palace for panchan lama and have significant meanings for Tibetan people.

One of the largest monasteries in Tibet which holds some couple of hundred monks. We visited this site during a morning and were lucky enough to witness a prayer. It matches other Tibetan monasteries when it comes to ornaments but the size is something different. All seemed much bigger. Do make sure to walk the Kora around it for an even better view from above.
