Commemorating over 300,000 deaths during the 1937 Japanese capture of the then Chinese capital, The Memorial of the Nanjing Massacre stands on a former execution and mass burial site. Two marble walls with names of 300,000 victims, halls with photographs of executions, and documents detailing the capture of Nanjing tell the gruesome story of the Japanese Imperial Army's occupation of China. Enter a coffin-shaped display hall to see a mass burial site excavated with numerous bones of victims, and visit a reconstruction of a house ransacked by soldiers. Solemn bronze sculptures and grey stone architecture punctuate gardens with pine and cypress trees. Walk around the 28,000 sq m (302,400 sq ft) grounds, and ring the large bronze bell for peace.
