Dwarfing the crowd at its feet, UNESCO-protected Leshan Giant Buddha (Da Fo) ranks easily as the tallest statue of the ancient world. Carved into the stone of a riverside cliff face, the reclining Buddha statue towers to a height of 71 m (233 ft). Make your way to the base and look upward to see the eighth-century statue's fingers protruding over its knees; each of the fingers exceeds a full-grown person in size. Afterwards, head up the staircase next to the statue and enjoy a more "face-to-face" perspective, including a close-up look at the Buddha's 7 m (23 ft) long ears. From the top, you'll also have a view out over the river and across the statue to the cave dwelling carved into the opposite side.
