Located on the edge of the Tibetan Himalayan Plateau, the 72,000 hectares (180,000 acres) of Jiuzhaigou Natural Reserve serve as home to innumerable species of plant and animal life. Declared a World Heritage Site, the national park contains nine Tibetan villages, seven of which are still populated. Among the park's other permanent inhabitants are the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey and giant panda. A variety of hiking trails and guided tours are available, ranging in number of days, distance, and focus. Plan ahead--visitors cannot travel in the park without a guide. Huge park. Need to take the bus from one venue to another. If the weather is good, you may hop on the bus however many times you like. Unfortunately for us, we only had good weather in the morning...

An amazing nature reserve. No other place like this on earth. This is a place where eco tourism is set at high standard. Nature kept as it is. There are several good hotels at the base camp area.

Jiuzhai Valley is a must-visit destination in China. Here, water shows stunning variety of colors and forms (some of which, I believe, can rarely be seen elsewhere). I wish there were more vantage points from which visitors can get panoramic views of the lakes and other water features. There is an extensive boardwalk system in the park, though you will have difficulty finding real trail experiences. Shuttle buses are easy to use, but can become packed. Try arriving early to avoid the crowds (momentarily).
