Sixth-century Saint Sofia Church gave its name to the city. Built on the necropolis of the ancient city of Serdika, the church is one of the most valuable pieces of early Christian architecture in southeastern Europe. According to popular lore, St. Sophia's miraculous powers protected the building over the centuries, withstanding Turks and earthquakes. Walk on floors covered with early Christian ornamental flora- and fauna-themed mosaics. See the icons depicting Sophia, the Divine Wisdom, portrayed as a young figure of Christ seated on a rainbow. • A church that looks quite modest in comparison to the neighbouring Nevski Cathedral is 900 years older and presents precious piece of history under the ground. with the ruins of previous churches...

  • A very ancient early Christian church built on the remains of even older churches. Under the church there are several tombs, which are accessible to visitors, and the entrance is from the side.

  • Nice place
  • Do not stop under any circumstances by car in the downtown area !!! Those in the parking lots lock the wheels, if they see that the car does not have a Bulgarian registration number, even if you pay the parking fee to pay even more the 30Leva wheel unlocking fee, because they know they don't get along with tourists. (They do not speak English at all, neither the parking lot employees, nor the police) It is a fraud with the consent of the police and those in the area, because they continue to do so even though everyone knows, including the police who do not help you and are indifferent. DO NOT GO THERE, JUST TRANSIT THE AREA!
