Create an itinerary including Assen's Fortress
High on a ridge above a river sits Assen's Fortress, a remnant of a stronghold with origins dating to the 4th century BCE. Inhabited by ancient Romans and Byzantines for long periods, the site once featured numerous feudal mansions and infrastructure, some of which have been excavated in recent years. Today you can see the remains of the 13th-century fortifications at the site. Look for the well-preserved two-story Church of the Holy Mother of God, rising strikingly out of a cliff. You can walk along the crumbling walls, amidst forests and rolling hills, to snap photos of these ancient structures that blend well into the scenery of the Rhodope Mountains. • Not far from Plovdiv is this fortress which deserves to be visited. The fortress itself is not large but it amazes and fascinates its structure and its position in the middle of nature. The path...

  • One of the cheap and easy-access historical sights in Bulgaria. There is a parking right next to the fortress. The parh is kept in very good condition both in summer and winter. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
  • It is a magnificent location in the hills. The church is in good condition and very nice. The view is fantastic. You can alsó find some castle seizing weapons. You can only buy the ticket in leva and you can't change nearby!!!
