Names, photographs, and personal possessions of 12,000 Jewish victims of World War II are kept at Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 1581 synagogue. Surrounded by bare walls and wooden floors, the site houses an artistic exhibit that outlines the suffering of Bosnia's Jewish population, who were originally expelled from Spain in 1566 and found refuge in Sarajevo. See the synagogue that became a prison after 1941, and find out how this community helped shape the history, art, and culture of their host country until the war ended. Read stories of the volunteers who protected the Jews during their struggle. • Really enjoyed visited this museum and learning about the Jewish community when I was in Sarajevo. Everything is explained in Bosnian and English and the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.

  • Old synagogue, remarkable in its own right. Museum guide is one of the best we encountered anywhere. He is so much fun and education about Jewish culture Sephardic especially. Please go there and enjoy it. If you encourage him to talk you can end up spending much more time than expected and being happy about it.
  • This is a must to visit. It is very fascinating. Aido was our tour guide, he is very friendly, helping, and explained everything about the history of the museum and country.
