Create an itinerary including Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque
An important Ottoman structure in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque represents the first mosque in the world to receive electricity in 1898. Built in 1532 by one of Turkey's prominent architects, the site still serves as one of the favorite meeting spots for local Muslims. Heavily damaged during the war in the 1990s, the mosque has been reconstructed, however with less decoration than before. See its stalactite ornaments below the 13 m (43 ft) wide dome and view the fountain in the yard that's still in use. Observe the differences in the colors of the interior as light streams through 51 windows along the carpet and highlights the Islamic art. Put Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Sarajevo trip builder site.

  • Can't miss it. It is part of the beautiful mix culture of this great city. All around is busy with restaurants and cafes and endless shopping.

  • Do I really need to say something about this place? By far the most unique place in the whole Sarajevo. All the ancient ottoman area is simply stunning. You can walk around this tiny streets and just when you expect to turn the corner into another tiny street the square with the mosque pops out. Beautiful
  • Well worth a visit and the staff at the info desk/office are very knowledgeable and genuinely friendly and helpful. They also speak great English. Can’t describe the tranquility you feel the moment you are inside the yard of this mosque! A very special place!
