Hobart Convict Penitentiary Historic Site
Over 50,000 male convicts attended Hobart Convict Penitentiary Historic Site between 1831 and 1853. Today, the chapel is a protected historical site. The penitentiary's complex of buildings containing the chapel also includes courtrooms, tunnels, solitary cells, and a refractory. The gallows in the execution yard, where 32 prisoners were hanged, were restored in the 1980s using original scaffolding. Volunteers conduct guided tours around the complex. Did the ghost tour and it was awesome! Was a small group and Stacy was amazing tour guide. Told us all about the history of the penitentiary. Had a cheeky ghost experience as well!! Would definitely do it again and recommend it to anyone visiting Hobart.
