Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / Western Australia / Greater Perth / Fremantle / The Fremantle Round House
Given the country's history as a penal colony, it might not surprise you that Western Australia's oldest public building is a former prison. Built in 1830, the rotund white-brick The Fremantle Round House originally housed convicted prisoners before becoming a police lockup. The chief constable and his family began to occupy the building in 1900. Today, you can tour the seaside building and ask knowledgeable volunteer guides questions. Head to the upper deck for scenic views of the Fremont coast and offshore islands. The Fremantle Round House reviews
I've been to the Round House a number of times over the years but for the first time, I engaged with a volunteer guide. They were friendly, helpful, informative and really added to the experience.

Very interesting stop at the Round House. Volunteers were very friendly and informative. Great view back down High street. The stories of prisoners were interesting.

An historic structure ... the oldest building that still stands in WA.Its Gaol cells are testimony to a dark past. The museum's volunteer guides are knowledgeable and add interest to any visit. Good views of the harbour - and park benches to rest alongside. Photographic art gallery next door. An excellent cafe is 50m from the museum.
