Cape Otway Lightstation
Visit the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia, Cape Otway Lightstation. An iconic highlight of the Great Ocean Road, the lighthouse was built in 1848 without mortar or cement. Walk to the adjoining Telegraph Station to see 250 km (155 mi) undersea telegraph cable laid in 1859. For history buffs, be sure to explore a radar bunker built by Americans in 1942, which now commemorates the lost lives of shipwrecked travelers. To reach the site, take a short detour from the Great Ocean Road through the forest and watch for koalas in their natural habitat. This is a great slice of the early history of the Shipwreck Coast. The lighthouse is an amazing building, considering it was erected nearly 175 years ago. The site buildings, of which there many, are all in great condition and add to the overall story of the site. At the end of the visit I found that I didn't even begrudge the $20 entry fee, which I had initially thought was a bit steep.

Very interesting site, clean and well maintained. As an overseas visitor this opened my eyes to Australia's growth as a nation, its defence, its economy and growing communication network and the significant impact this lighthouse and its ancillary activities had on that history. Highly recommended
