Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / New South Wales / Byron Shire / Byron Bay / Cape Byron Lighthouse
Siting on the most easterly point of the country's mainland, Cape Byron Lighthouse was constructed in 1901 and fully automated in 1989. The iconic white tower attracts nearly half a million visitors each year, offering commanding views of the ocean and the coast. Take a guided tour and learn more about shipwrecks at the museum below. Remember to bring a pair of binoculars to watch humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles. You can also stay overnight at the former lighthouse keeper's residence or one of the two cottages once occupied by assistant keepers. Park mid way and walk up to enjoy the sweep of views. Weekends are crazy busy - avoid if you have a choice.

We attempted to visit the lighthouse twice. It is very hard to find parking and the parking fee is $8.00. I know its not much but we have never had to pay for parking to visit a lighthouse before...

There are parking attendants that will ask you to keep moving if you attempt to stop near the top for even 5 seconds so get a passenger prepared with their mobile to take a quick snap while you drive by. I didn’t attempt it but there is street parking below being patrolled non stop by parking enforcement. We drove past him ticketing several cars that tried their best to find a spot and risked being over the yellow line by a tires length. Best to walk up but be prepared for a 40-50min walk one way to the top and then whatever wait to get near the lighthouse itself because of the line. Don’t forget to buy a ticket to get in the lighthouse. It’s about $26.
Nice views, can be difficult to find a car park. Overseas visitors especially from USA think they don't have to use the footpaths/side walks and get upset when you nearly run them over as they walk down the centre of the road. Can't put brains in driftwood or statues.
