At the very center of the World Heritage-listed Imperial Enclosure stands Hue Royal Palace, a citadel within citadels reserved exclusively for the emperor and his eunuch servants and royal concubines. The entire imperial city, which once represented a political, cultural, and religious hub of the Nguyen dynasty, is ringed by a moat fed by the Perfume River. As you approach its core through one of ten gates, notice how the entire ornate compound combines a sense of geometrical symmetry and balance with opulence and power--even in its current war-ravaged state. Inside the historic building, explore hundreds of different rooms once banned to commoners. Wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water, since days can get severely hot here.
