#1 of 12 in Things to do in Dong Ha
Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
Walk along Vinh Moc Tunnel to explore former underground Vietnamese shelter. In order to save their lives, and avoid American bombers, people decided to dig, and move their village to 23m (75 feet) underground. Firstly, you walk through the first level, 12m (39 feet) deep, where you can see photographs of families who hid there. Then, continue to the second level, 15m (49 feet) deep, and see washing rooms, maternity rooms, health stations, operation room, meeting room, and the well. The deepest third level contains a well, and it served as a main shelter during bombing. On the walls read all the information about the villagers, and get out at the magnificent beach. • The tour at Vinh Moc tunnel is awesome. Firstly, the guide is very experienced and she speaks fluent English. Secondly, the site is well maintained and when you enter the tunnels, it brings you back to the past and makes you wonder how people survived for 6 years. Lastly, do come with a tour group as the journey here is remote and far from the city. Definitely recommend this place!
  • We enjoyed exploring through the tunnels and taking the different paths to see where we would end up, remember to bring a torch! However it could have been improved by having a guide, and I think you can enquire about getting one in front of the documentary room.
