It is one of significant historical place and trail. Specially, 4th grade local kids learn many details from social study. It is not super long trail but you need well preparation, because of rough.... more »

This is a strange historical site, deliberately left rough in the middle of a manicured green golf resort. The trail isn't long (probably less than a mile) but is very rough and better shoes than flip-flops are highly recommended, although we managed. Park by the gas station and follow the walking trail, which turns into the lava field and becomes a little hard to follow but there are a few signs along the way.

To get the most of it take the free guided tours offered by Kings Court shopping center on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30. Otherwise you may not find the most important ones and you may not know what you are looking at. The guide provides lots of insights into Hawaiian traditions and beliefs. Just be aware you will be in the middle of a lava field for about one hour. So we would recommend walking shoes, hats, water...
