Consecrated in 1878, Mickve Israel Temple was built in an unusual Neo-Gothic style that echoes the elaborate architecture of the Victorian period--the only synagogue in the United States like it. Home to the third-oldest Jewish congregation in the United States, the temple and adjacent museum tell the tale of Judaism in the South. See the temple's Sefer Torah, a 15th-century Torah brought from London with the founding congregational members in 1733. Examine the letters written to the congregation by Presidents Washington, Jefferson, and Madison. Be aware that the synagogue may not be open during Jewish and federal holidays. Great historic synagogue that is located Downtown Savannah. They offer shabbat services on Friday and Saturday. The temple itself is very beautiful inside and out with stain glass windows and wonderful architecture. The congregation is mixed with ages and backgrounds and are very involved within the community. Their annual Food Festival draws and massive crowd at the end of October.

We visited Congregation Mickve Israel on a recent trip to Savannah. It is a beautiful synagogue in the historic district. The docents were very knowledgeable and bring the history of the 3rd oldest synagogue in the US. In fact its founding is almost as old as Savannah itself. The synagogue building dates back to 1878, and its Gothic style is rare for temples today. The many stained glass panels are vivid when seen on sunny days. On the second floor, there is a small museum with 2 deer-skin Torahs, among other historical artifacts.
