Spouting Horn, Poipu

#2 of 31 in Nature in Kauai
Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
Local Hawaii legend speaks of Spouting Horn and its ocean blowhole on Kauai's south shore. Formed by a combination of volcanic lava rocks and erosion from crashing waves, the spout represents the home of a mythical and angry lizard. Waves funneled into the small opening in the rock shelf can blast as far as 15 m (50 ft) into the air from the mouth of the blowhole, spraying the surrounding area. You can take photos of the spout from the nearby viewpoint with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. Keep in mind that this force of nature can be dangerous; remain behind the guard rails and obey all posted signs. • This is a very neat place with a great view. However, don't get too close to the edge as those waves come crashing in about every 7th wave. My adult daughter nearly got pulled into the ocean.  more »
  • The Spouting horn has a beautiful view but you only need a few minutes there to see the horn. Do not plan a lot of time for this event.  more »
  • Plenty of parking and fun for a quick stop. There area few souvenir booths which are fun to browse. Plan on maybe 30 minutes here.
  • This natural wonder is easily accessible and worth the quick stop! So many chickens. Plenty of parking. Public restrooms.
