The 335 hectare (829 acre) Amicalola Falls State Park means "tumbling water" in Cherokee and aptly describes this park that includes Georgia's highest waterfall--222 m (729 ft) in height. The park also serves as one of the starting points of the 3,500 km (2,175 mi) Appalachian Trail. Stop by the visitor center first to orient yourself, collect maps, and view an Appalachian Trail display. Choose from among four groups of trails, one of which leads up to the top of the waterfall, for treks amidst the mountainous terrain. The park hosts hiking trails, campsites, picnic shelters, lodging, and dining facilities. On site you'll find 25 campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs, and there's a playground for kids. The falls were pretty, but if you have a friend or family member in a wheelchair, read on to decide if it's worth the drive. There is an ADA trail to allow wheelchair access to view the waterfall, which is nice. Unfortunately, the trail is less than .25 miles, so you make the drive but aren't able to enjoy that much time on the nature trail. It would be great if there were more trails that could be accessed. We were going to try carrying our son and his wheelchair onto another trail, but there are a lot of wooden staircases.
We visited here during our honeymoon in August. It was a very quick stop (just wanted to take some photos and see the falls) since it was the end of the day and a thunderstorm was brewing. We drove to the top of the falls and parked to take some pictures. We then drove down and parked near the ADA trail. We followed the trail and made it to the bridge over the middle of the falls which was breathtaking. The scenery (hills, woods, falls, etc) were absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth the $5 gate fee.
