A cliff dwelling built by the prehistoric Sinagua people, Montezuma Castle National Monument took three centuries to complete. The dwelling has five stories and 20 rooms, giving it its castle-like appearance. View the dwelling from the lookout point below, then learn about the Sinagua culture and history in the visitor center near the viewing platform. There you will discover that the name of the attraction developed thanks to a misinterpretation by early settlers who thought that the Aztec leader Montezuma had something to do with its construction. Montezuma Castle National Monument reviews
Neat to see the dwelling way up high in the cliff. Amazing that they could build something like that! Reminds me of Mesa Verde, but on a much smaller scale. But if you're in the area, worth taking... more »
We stopped here on our way through town. Ended up finding out I qualified for Veterans admission. Interesting how they carved their dwellings into the side of a mountain to get out of Beaver Creek... more »
Very interesting visit. However, I question the $10 per person price tag. Thankfully, the ranger was kind enough to use our previous Grand Canyon National Park entrance receipt and allow us to upgrade to an America the Beautiful annual pass. The monument is interesting, good for about a 30 stroll around the grounds and museum. The museum also has a very good junior ranger scavenger hunt for the kids. I wouldn’t quite rank this a must-see if strapped for time in the Grand Canyon area, but fun if you have the time.
It was just okay. I mean you pay a good bit to go see a building in the side of a mountain. Cant go in it, you can only see it from a distance and this was all there was. Place was really nice and clean but we stayed for about 30 minutes and left. Nice for a good picture but that's about it. Spent 20 years in Europe and have seen castles, to me this is no castle.
