#1 of 26 in Things to do in Stamford
Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
A private Tudor mansion open to the public, Burghley House features unspoiled Elizabethan architecture, rolling parklands, and an outstanding collection of art. Wander through the lavish state rooms, featuring dramatic wall paintings of 17th-century Italian artist Antonion Verrio. Witness Verrio's virtuosic representation of mythological gods in the Heaven Room, and then descend through the grotesque Hell Staircase. Special exhibitions in the Treasury Gallery display highlights from the private collection. Leave time to stroll through the rolling parkland, designed by English landscape architect Capability Brown. More recent additions include a sculpture garden and a "garden of surprises." The Orangery Restaurant and Garden Cafe offer refreshments, and you can shop for souvenirs at the Courtyard and Garden Shops. • The house was amazing and staff were always happy to help and assist with questions. Worth a visit. The gardens are immaculate and has something for every age range. Will definitely be going back.  more »

  • Brilliant day in the house and gardens. Could easily spend more than a day here. All the staff in the house were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We had lunch in the orangery restaurant and the food was great but a little pricey.
  • This was a return visit which was free because it was within twelve months. The house is amazing with much to see of interest. It helped that we went on a guided tour which certainly added to our experience from last time. The gardens are wonderful and just my cup of tea. The water gardens were being thoroughly enjoyed by the children.
