Where many castles employed a moat as watery protection, Elizabeth Castle used the surrounding sea. This fortress sits on a rocky islet with the ocean water encircling it at high tide. If you visit when the tide's in, take the ferry. If the tide's out, walk along the causeway (you can also take the ferry if you prefer). When you reach the castle, climb to the top of the battlements for views back to the Jersey coast, and view exhibitions that tell the fortress's story and present military memorabilia. Try to time your visit in conjunction with the midday soldier's parade and firing of the cannon. Even the miserable lady in the gift shop shouldn't put you off. The guys on the Duck and other staff are super friendly. They were let down by the miserable ride lady in the Castle gift shop. That... more »

A wonderful, peerless experience in the depth of winter. With the Castle shut out of season it was easy to get lost in the feeling that the whole place was ours. The apartment is well appointed... more »

Interesting castle with a varied history from 1500's right through to WW2 when used by the German military. There is often a free guide at 1.30pm giving very detailed history. You can walk there during low tide but much more fun taking the amphibious boat. Cafe on site. The island it is on is also the place where St Helier lived and there is a shrine there dedicated to him.

The walk out there is not for faint hearted, very long, and quite exposed. However, the ferry is so cute. Excellent volunteers who are knowledgeable and engaging, the man with firing the cannon was just brilliant. Very interesting place, you could easily spend the whole day out there. Thoroughly recommend a visit.
