Highclere Castle, Newbury

4.2
Must see · Castle · Architectural Building
The stately Highclere Castle serves as the primary filming location of the British television drama Downton Abbey and as a real-life country home. You'll find opulently furnished staterooms and bedrooms inside the home, and exquisitely manicured gardens on the 405 hectares (1,000 acres) of parkland outside it. Head down to the cellar to see the collection of antiquities in the Egyptian exhibit. A guide will lead you through the castle, which is still the residence of the Earl of Carnarvon. If you're traveling with a young child, you'll have to leave your stroller in the front hall (space is limited). A visit to Highclere Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Newbury trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Great visit. Lots more to do then just go through the castle state rooms. There is the mummy Museum and the grounds. If you plan ahead and plan to just chill drawing it all in I’d say you will have the best experience. I saw some with picnic baskets and lunch... great idea!
  • Highclere was number one on our American cousins viewing list and it did not disappoint them. Very busy, with visitors quoting lines from the series and a jam packed gift shop. Prices for all pockets. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Food available, beautiful gardens, a great day out. Would have been fun to see people (actors) dressed in costume.
