  • Just returned from here. We had a horrible experience. My husband and I were looking for a variety of cheeses. I am heavily pregnant and said I was looking for some hard cheeses, easy enough. My husband asked one of the women who worked there if they had any pasteurized blue cheeses. She said she was new and asked over to another woman working. This is when it went down-hill. The other woman behind the till turned to me and asked in an accusatory tone, "Will you be eating it?" I said I'd try it. She stopped what she was doing at the till to come over to us and start what felt like a diatribe about cheese during pregnancy. Being helpful on cheese pasteurization processes and their company recommendations would be fine, but judging, scolding and humiliating customers, and not even answering husband's question, is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. My husband and I just looked down and hoped she'd just stop. (Side note, I'm a nutritionist and I lecture in human nutrition and maternal health, but I thought I'd just let this woman get on with it so we could go about what was, before entering, a lovely day.) But no, she didn't stop there! She preceded this judgmental rant at the till to other people. Another customer said she was a midwife and that I hadn't done anything wrong, but this woman wasn't happy with that and continued her rant - insisting how she wouldn't do this and if I want to take the risk, etc. etc. For the record, I didn't say I was going to take any risks with my pregnancy; she really needed to stop accusing me of this in the shop. It was absurd. So now this woman has argued with a nutritionist and a midwife, when no one wanted her opinion, it was just one question to identify a type of cheese. The way this woman spoke to me and then proceeded to talk about me to other customers right in front of me was horrible. I just walked out of the shop wanting this experience to go away. My husband then bought the gruyere we'd already picked out. He didn't dare get that blue cheese. We will never, ever, step foot in that shop again.
