A publicly owned art gallery opened in 1824, Manchester Art Gallery fills three buildings with both domestic and international art. The collection includes works by French Impressionist Pierre Adolphe Valette, "The Picnic" by Wynford Dewhurst, and a Cezanne that depicts scenes from Manchester painted during his stay in the city. William Burges' reformist furniture design as well as a collection of silver and glassware also grace the gallery rooms. Admission to the gallery is free. • You really can't go wrong with the art you will see for free (suggested donation £3) - some beautiful paintings you will recognise and very interesting ones that aren't as well known. Friendly staff.....  more »
  • Lukewarm display of a handful of famous artists. Also some dross that remains in the collection long after the tastes of Mancunian benefactors parted ways with the verdict of art history. COVID...  more »

  • Very interesting art gallery. Good permanent + temp exhibitions. The shop is also good for cards etc if you want to get something a bit more unique. Cafe good too
  • The cafe alone is worth your visit, an oasis of calm in the city with an extensive and somewhat exotic collection of cakes, and a lovely menu of light meals and sandwiches. The quality of the ingredients from the jam to fine and fragrant tea was evident in my cream tea. Service is also efficient and welcoming.
