Apsley House, London

#28 of 262 in Historic Sites in London
History Museum · Historic Site
The London home of the Dukes of Welllington, Apsley House now functions as a museum and art gallery run by English Heritage. Built in the 18th century, the house represents possibly the only example of an English aristocratic townhouse from the period. The heritage museum contains a collection of 200 paintings, including works by Velazquez and Rubens. Eighty-three of the paintings were gathered as part of a looting of Joseph Bonaparte's baggage train following the Battle of Vitoria. Admire the grandeur of the stately home, and if you're lucky, you might catch a sighting of the ninth Duke of Wellington, who still resides here from time to time. • I never heard about this museum before but when I did I wanted to make a visit. I love museums and specially those where you can visit old houses with beautiful architecture. Apsley House was everything I was looking for and more! The place is so beautiful and the story of it interesting too. I love the fact that the audio guide was free. It was really interesting! I was just a bit sad that we couldn't take pictures but it's okay.
  • To visit Wellington home 🏡 very interesting place. To see all the paintings he collected. All the impress gifts Wellington was given from different countries. The talk the gentleman gave us at the end, gave us an insight into Wellington life more.
