Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King Liverpool
Seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool, Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King Liverpool is also known as "Paddy's Wigwam" or the "Mersey Funnel." The construction of the modern building took from 1962 to 1967. Visit the bright nave and cathedral for a service or simply pop in to admire Frederick Gibberd's design. Include the crypt under the cathedral in your tour; a different designer prior to World War II constructed it earlier. This sheltered granite hideaway hosts the Liverpool Beer Festival every year, which attracts visitors from the around the world. It's quite amazing. A roof over so vast a space without a pillar or column. The central altar is surrounded along all sides by large 'niches' for want of a better word, dedicated to worship or sculptures of whatever kind. It is a beautiful space and place, sitting on top of very wide stairs overlooking Hope Street. Cafe and shop are on street level. Well worth a visit, just to see or for quiet contemplation.

If you're looking to visit a modern auditorium devoid of any warmth or atmosphere - this is your kind place. However, if you're looking for a place of worship that expresses the beauty, permanence and transcendence of Catholicism, you'll have to look somewhere else. Ironically, Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral is probably going to be your best alternative to this monstrosity!
