Lindisfarne Priory, Holy Island

A magnificent ruined priory in a beautiful setting. I spent about an hour just wandering around and got a real sense of both its importance as a centre of early Christianity and its remoteness. The evocative ruins with their soaring arches and huge empty windows gave me a vivid impression of how grand the church must have been. You can still see some of the original decorated stonework. I also enjoyed discovering what remains of the monks' quarters, refectory, kitchen and outbuildings. All of them are clearly labelled with information boards and artist's impressions providing a good insight into how the monks lived. The ruins cover a large area but it's a fairly easy walk on grass with a few steps and access ramps. The little museum is well worth a visit and there's a lovely gift shop. An unforgettable experience!

If you have any interest at all in early British monastic history then you just have to visit Lindisfarne and the Priory. Utterly fabulous to wander around and soak up the atmosphere. Visitor centre has well curated display. Beware the need to cross the causeway safely. Utterly magical experience. Very highly recommended if such places are your thing.
