Trip Planner: Europe / UK / England / Peak District National Park / Hope Valley / Castleton / Treak Cliff Cavern
Treak Cliff Cavern is a show cave near Castleton in Derbyshire, England. It is part of the Castleton Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of only two sites where the ornamental mineral Blue John is still excavated (the other is the nearby Blue John Cavern). As part of an agreement with English Nature, the Blue John that can be seen in the show cave is not mined but it is extracted in small quantities from other areas of the cave and made into saleable items like bowls, jewellery and ornaments. To visit Treak Cliff Cavern on your holiday in Castleton, and find out what else Castleton has to offer, use our Castleton.
The cave comprises two sections, the Old Series, discovered by lead miners in the 18th century, and the New Series, discovered during blasting in the 1920s. Only the Old Series contains Blue John, but the New Series is well decorated with flowstone, stalagmites and stalactites. Three human skeletons and flint implements from the Neolithic era were found in a small cave nearby in 1921.

Treak Cliff Cavern reviews
We decided to visit on a very wet day which was Ideal. Easy and free to park but lots of steep steps up to the entrance, not a problem for us though. Very helpful and friendly staff who got us in on..... more »
Interesting experience and beautiful inside but would prefer an actual host to show you around and make it more interactive like Peak cavern. Not good value for money, should be cheaper more »
I haven't been down the cavern myself but the gift shop is to die for! Truly stunning and well displayed healing crystals and minerals. The best price too! So cheap! Great staff. Worth the walk up to just for a look.
This is such an interesting and unusual place. The guide was really lovely and explained things well. I was appreciative that we could go at our own pace and didn't feel pressured to keep up. The gift shop has a good price range of souvenirs. The kids were happy they could afford something. The museum is tiny but very interesting. We also polished our own blue John stone which was good fun. It's a bit difficult to get up the hill to begin (if you have any joint or muscle issues) but the tour is much easier to do. I have no idea how you'd get there if you were in a wheelchair. Great views from the gallery. It's a really nice place to take kids.
