Explore the tunnels of the underground city of Kaymakli. First opened to tourists in 1964, this city consists of houses constructed around nearly 100 tunnels, extending eight stories below ground. During your exploration of the four floors open to visitors, note that each space is organized around ventilation shafts, and many of the tunnels are still being used as storage areas, stables, and cellars. One of the largest underground settlements in the region, the tunnels are thought have supported up to 3,500 people. Visit the stables on the first floor, the church on the second floor, the storage areas, kitchens, and wine and oil presses on the third floor, and the even more extensive storage rooms filled with earthenware jars on the fourth floor. Hire one of the tour guides at the entrance of the city to help you understand the significance of the tunnels and what you see, as there are no posted information boards within the tunnels. Those with high blood pressure or a fear of small spaces may want to avoid the lower levels, as the tunnels are small and the ceilings were built low to ward off persecutors.
