The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
GBR Sport Fishing Charters has been added to your itinerary. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Terra Nova Gallery (in Kuranda), Port Douglas (Four Mile Beach, Ngarru Gallery, &more) and Wangetti (Hartley's Crocodile Adventures & Rex Lookout). And it doesn't end there: tour the pleasant surroundings at Esplanade Boardwalk, take in nature's colorful creations at Botanical Gardens, pause for some photo ops at 1876 Landing Party, and get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Cairns Aquarium.

To see maps, other places to visit, more things to do, and more tourist information, you can read our Cairns travel route app.

Emerald to Cairns is an approximately 6.5-hour flight. You can also drive. Traveling from Emerald in June, Cairns is somewhat warmer at night with lows of 22°C. On the 22nd (Mon), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.

An area defined by its close relationship with the ocean and its focus on the beach-going lifestyle, Cairns Region has a picture-postcard aesthetic that combines favorably with a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. A relative small slither of land--4,135 sq km (1,597 sq mi)--the region nevertheless boasts a large number of attractive beaches, coastal enclaves, scenic towns, and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. The region revolves around the economic prosperity of its immaculate capital, the city of Cairns.
