Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Step out of Hobart with an excursion to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton--about 30 minutes away. On the 26th (Sat), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. Next up on the itinerary: take in nature's colorful creations at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, snap pictures at Richmond Bridge, see the interesting displays at Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), and get curious at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Melbourne to Hobart is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of ferry and car; or do a combination of ferry and bus. When traveling from Melbourne in December, plan for slightly colder days and about the same nights in Hobart: temperatures range from 24°C by day to 13°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Mon) to allow time to drive to Port Arthur.

Surrounded by shark-infested waters and connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus of land, Port Arthur ranks among Australia's top historical sites and heritage areas.
Kick off your visit on the 29th (Tue): stroll through Three Capes Track, get up close to creatures of the deep with Wild Ocean Tasmania, and then explore the striking landscape at Tessellated Pavement.
