Basse-Normandie, also known as Lower Normandy, boasts 470 km (292 mi) of coastline as well as outstanding sites and historical attractions related to the famous D-Day landings on the beaches in June 1944 during World War II. This predominantly agricultural region contains the Cotentin Peninsula extending north-westward into the English Channel. Due to the peninsula's isolation, this area has historical and cultural significance as one of the last remaining strongholds of the Norman language, and a vacation here can one in an entirely different country.
