One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Liliuokalani Gardens and Rainbow Falls. Change things up with these side-trips from Hilo: Volcano (Akatsuka Orchid Gardens & Jagger Museum), Steam Vents (in Pahoa) and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Pu'u Huluhulu trail, Keanakakoi Crater Overlook, &more). Sydney, Australia to Hilo is an approximately 15.5- hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus. Traveling from Sydney to Hilo, you'll gain 20 hours due to the time zone difference. Expect a daytime high around 31°C in December, and nighttime lows around 21°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Naalehu.

On the 29th (Tue), Head underground at Kula Kai Caverns, experience rural life at Paradise Meadows Orchard & Bee Farm Home of Hawaii's Local Buzz, enjoy the sand and surf at Ka Lae, then kick back and relax at Papakōlea Green Sand Beach, and finally visit a coastal fixture at Ka Lae Light. On the next day, enjoy the sand and surf at Holoholokai Beach Park, walk around Whittington Beach Park, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Punalu‘U Beach.

Traveling by car from Hilo to Naalehu takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. When traveling from Hilo in December, plan for little chillier days and cooler nights in Naalehu: temperatures range from 22°C by day to 7°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Wed) early enough to travel to Kapaau.

You can drive from Kapaau to Kailua-Kona in 1.5 hours. Traveling from Kapaau in December, expect nights in Kailua-Kona to be warmer, around 24°C, while days are somewhat warmer, around 32°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 14th (Thu) so you can travel to Honolulu.
