Carcassonne

Medieval Heart of France

Best known as a fortified town, Carcassonne is a walled city that provided the inspiration for the castle in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and the location for many scenes in Kevin Costner's movie "Robin Hood." For a daily dose of excitement, medieval jousting tournaments are held twice per day between the two walls--while this may sound like a typical touristy show, it's actually an entertaining display of combative competition and horsemanship.
Explore Carcassonne's surroundings by going to Musee des Augustins (in Toulouse), Grotte de Niaux (in Niaux) and La Cave Rouge, Live Escape Game (in Thuir). There's lots more to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Cité de Carcassonne, admire the masterpieces at Musee des Beaux-Arts, indulge in some culinary diversions at Vin en Vacances - Food & Wine Tours, and steep yourself in history at Cathar Castles.

To find where to stay, maps, reviews, and more tourist information, you can read our Carcassonne vacation planning tool.

Cancun, Mexico to Carcassonne is an approximately 17.5-hour flight. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Central European Standard Time (CET), which is usually a 6 hour difference. Traveling from Cancun in May, you will find days in Carcassonne are slightly colder (24°C), and nights are colder (12°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Sat) to allow time to drive to Marseille.
