Sarlat-la-Caneda is the capital of the former Périgord Noir, now referred to as the Aquitaine region that is home to a historical area consisting of impeccably preserved 14th-century buildings and sites.
Step out of Sarlat-la-Caneda with an excursion to Roque Saint-Christophe Fort et Cite Troglodytiques in Peyzac-le-Moustier--about 30 minutes away. There's much more to do: explore the historical opulence of Chateau des Milandes, make a trip to Chateau de Commarque, take in nature's colorful creations at Eyrignac et ses Jardins en Dordogne, and contemplate the long history of Chateau de Castelnaud.

Best known as a fortified town, Carcassonne is a walled city that provided the inspiration for the castle in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and the location for many scenes in Kevin Costner's movie "Robin Hood." For a daily dose of excitement, medieval jousting tournaments are held twice per day between the two walls--while this may sound like a typical touristy show, it's actually an entertaining display of combative competition and horsemanship.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Carcassonne: Grotte de Niaux (in Niaux), Cathedrale Sainte-Cecile (in Albi) and Basilique Saint-Sernin (in Toulouse). Next up on the itinerary: wander the streets of Cité de Carcassonne, explore the world behind art at Musee des Beaux-Arts, take in the views from Le Pont Vieux (The Old Bridge), and steep yourself in history at Cathar Castles.

The 2013 European "Capital of Culture," Marseille is the largest port city on the breezy Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in France.
Venture out of the city with trips to Trolib (in Cassis), Paroisse Cathédrale Saint Sauveur Aix-en-Provence (in Aix-en-Provence) and Route des Cretes (in La Ciotat).
