The Heart of Tasmania

Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Launceston: Low Head Penguin Tours (in Low Head) and Beauty Point (Seahorse World & Platypus House). Dedicate the 21st (Mon) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's much more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve, walk around City Park, take a memorable tour with Tours, and admire the verdant scenery at The Tamar Valley.

Melbourne to Launceston is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also do a combination of ferry and car; or do a combination of ferry and bus. Traveling from Melbourne in December, things will get slightly colder in Launceston: highs are around 25°C and lows about 10°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 23rd (Wed) early enough to go by car back home.
