Kick off your visit on the 7th (Sat): look for gifts at Women Artisans Cooperative Santa Elena and Monteverde, get to know the resident critters at The Bat Jungle, then take in nature's colorful creations at Monteverde Butterfly Garden (Jardin de Mariposas), and finally relax in the rural setting at El Trapiche Tour. Surfing remains the main reason to take a trip to Tamarindo, as the beachside town is mostly known for its excellent waves.
Step off the beaten path and head to Pura Aventura and Adrenaline & Extreme Tours. Step out of Tamarindo with an excursion to Playa Hermosa in Playa Hermosa--about 1h 20 min away. The rainforest meets the sea at Manuel Antonio National Park, a small but scenic natural preserve on the west coast of Costa Rica.
