The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Take a break from the city and head to Palm Cove Beach and Nature & Wildlife Tours. You'll discover tucked-away gems like River Rafting & Tubing and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. Go for a jaunt from Cairns to Kuranda to see Birdworld Kuranda about 40 minutes away. There's much more to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Trinity Beach, relax and rejuvenate at some of the best spas, view the masterpieces at Bones and Jones, and explore the galleries of Doongal Aboriginal Art Gallery Cairns.

Traveling by car from Port Douglas to Cairns takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a shuttle; or take a bus. April in Cairns sees daily highs of 34°C and lows of 26°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Gold Coast.

A city of towering skyscrapers, sandy beaches, and tree-lined streets, Gold Coast has an unpretentious air complemented by a citywide focus on sports and the arts.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Burleigh Heads Beach and Coolangatta Beach. Get in touch with nature at Cape Byron Walking Track and Burleigh Head National Park. Explore Gold Coast's surroundings by going to Belongil Beach (in Byron Bay), Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre (in Murwillumbah) and Tropical Fruit World (in Duranbah). You can fly from Cairns to Gold Coast in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a train. In April, Gold Coast is slightly colder than Cairns - with highs of 30°C and lows of 19°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Tue) early enough to travel to Sydney.

Expect little chillier weather when traveling from Gold Coast in April: highs in Sydney hover around 26°C, while lows dip to 17°C.
