Termed "Cathar Country," Aude is a department between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrénées mountains offering many opportunities to enjoy a wine tasting, go fishing, cycle along the shore or on mountain passes, and tour its many Cathar castles. With 10 natural regions, you are sure to find plenty of things to do, such as watching pink flamingos who congregate to the east, go orchid hunting inland, or hike in the forests with rare peatlands to the north and west. Arts and crafts are popular, and you can watch artisans work at many of the businesses along the A61 and A9. Finally, you can visit the Canal du Midi passing right through Aude on its way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.
