Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and The Painted Church. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Kailua-Kona: Scuba & Snorkeling (in Kawaihae), Captain Cook (Kealakekua Bay & The Captain Cook Monument) and Honaunau Bay (in Honaunau). There's lots more to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Makalawena/Pu'u Ali'i, take an in-depth tour of Hulihe'e Palace, admire the majestic nature at Kahalu'u Beach Park, and experience rural life at Kona Coffee Living History Farm.

Plan my trip to Kailua-Kona with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

Boston to Kailua-Kona is an approximately 16- hour combination of flight and bus. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or fly. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Hawaii Standard Time (HST), which is usually a -5 hour difference. Expect much warmer temperatures when traveling from Boston in April; daily highs in Kailua-Kona reach 83°F and lows reach 72°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 9th (Thu) early enough to go by car to Hilo.

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Step off the beaten path and head to Kīlauea and Hawaiian Vanilla Company. Get out of town with these interesting Hilo side-trips: Kapoho Tide Pools (in Pahoa), Lava Viewing Area (in Kalapana) and Akatsuka Orchid Gardens (in Volcano). There's much more to do: explore the striking landscape at Holei Sea Arch, kick back and relax at Laupahoehoe Beach Park, stop by Big Island Candies, and take in nature's colorful creations at Liliuokalani Gardens.

To find traveler tips, reviews, and tourist information, use the Hilo road trip app.

Getting from Kailua-Kona to Hilo by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a bus. Plan for a bit cooler nights when traveling from Kailua-Kona in April since evenings lows in Hilo dip to 67°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Tue) so you can travel back home.
