Paramaribo

— 1 day

Wooden City

With the chance to visit a World Heritage-listed inner city, tours of Paramaribo remain among the most culturally enriching things tourists can do in Suriname.
Kick off your visit on the 14th (Mon): don't miss a visit to Centrale Markt, then get to know the resident critters at Paramaribo Zoo, then pause for some serene contemplation at Saint Peter and Paul Basilica, and finally pause for some serene contemplation at Dutch reformed church.

To find more things to do, reviews, other places to visit, and tourist information, you can read our Paramaribo itinerary planner.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiport is Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport. In December, daily temperatures in Paramaribo can reach 87°F, while at night they dip to 76°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.

The smallest country in South America, Suriname features thick jungles, rushing rivers, and lively, culturally diverse places to visit. Independent since 1975, Suriname retained the Dutch language and influences, as well as the Caribbean and the culture of its indigenous tribes. A third of the country's landscape is made up of natural reserves, providing tourists the opportunity to explore lush tropical rainforests, pristine beaches, scenic rivers and waterfalls, as well as a staggering variety of animals and birds. On a trip to Suriname you shouldn't pass up a visit to its capital and only city, World Heritage-listed Paramaribo, noted for its colonial-era architecture.
