Pay a visit to Damascus Umayyad Mosque, one of the holiest and largest places of worship in the Islamic world, and considered a masterpiece of early Islamic architecture. The massive complex was first erected in 634 CE on the site of a Byzantine church believed to contain the head of John the Baptist, and also marking the place where ancient Aramean and Roman temples once stood. Rebuilt a number of times, the grandiose structure boasts mosaics, art pieces, and minarets from different time periods, as well as the mausoleum that contains the remains of Sultan Saladin in a wooden sarcophagus.
